How to build a Shopify jewellery store that sells (India)
Lessons from two live jewellery stores we built in Surat — on variants, metafields, gold-rate pricing, WhatsApp ordering, payments and what it all costs.
A Shopify jewellery store that sells is built around how jewellery is chosen: price-moving choices (metal, stone, carat) as variants, ring size and engraving as line-item properties, and specs like shape as metafields for filtering. Add clear photos, Razorpay with EMI for Indian buyers and WhatsApp enquiries for custom pieces. With Yukti AI, Shopify stores start from ₹60,000 and typically take about 7–10 days.
What makes a jewellery store on Shopify different?
Jewellery isn't picked off a shelf like a T-shirt. A shopper chooses a stone, a metal, a purity, a carat weight, a shape and a size — often in that order — and is about to pay a high price for something they can't hold. A generic Shopify template gives you a flat menu, a standard product page and a variant dropdown. A Shopify jewellery store that sells has to follow how jewellery is actually chosen.
This guide is drawn from two live jewellery stores Yukti AI built in Surat: Shinelabb, a lab-grown diamond and moissanite brand at shinelabb.com, and Miswah Jewellery at miswah.in. Both are custom themes on Shopify's free Dawn theme, and each took about 7 days of build work.
Should you choose Shopify for a jewellery ecommerce website in India?
For most D2C jewellery brands, yes. Shopify handles checkout, cart, variants, filters, hosting and security, so your budget goes into the parts shoppers notice: the menu, the product page and the catalogue structure. Your store sits on your own Shopify account, and you edit text, images and banners yourself in the theme editor. Two things to know up front: Shopify's checkout itself can't be replaced without Shopify Plus, and Shopify Payments isn't available to stores based in India, so you'll use a gateway such as Razorpay (more on that below).
If your main need is selling to trade buyers — salespeople sending catalogues to known wholesale clients — a custom catalogue system may suit better. Shinelabb actually runs both: a B2B catalogue system for wholesale and a Shopify store for retail shoppers.
How should you set up variants for metal, purity and size?
This is the decision that makes or breaks a jewellery store. Shopify allows up to three options per product (for example metal, stone and carat) and, as of Shopify's current Help Center documentation, up to 2,048 variants per product. That sounds like plenty, but jewellery multiplies fast. On Shinelabb, treating metal, metal colour, stone, carat and ring size all as variants would have produced 2 × 2 × 3 × 3 × 24 = 864 combinations per ring — and five options, when Shopify allows three.
The fix is to sort each choice into the right bucket:
| Bucket | Use it for | Shinelabb example |
|---|---|---|
| Variants | Choices that change the price | Metal × stone × carat = 12 variants per ring |
| Line-item properties | Choices that describe the piece but don't change the price | Metal colour, Indian ring size (4 to 27), engraving |
| Metafields | Specs shoppers search and filter by | Shape, setting style, carat weight, occasion — 19 metafield definitions |
Result: each Shinelabb ring stays at 12 variants instead of 864, and the cart, filters and checkout all remain native Shopify. Miswah takes a similar approach with two price-moving options — metal type (925 silver, 10K, 14K, 18K, platinum) and diamond size / total carat weight — handled by its product page and import pipeline.
What are metafields, and why do jewellers need them?
A metafield is a custom field on a Shopify product. For jewellery it's where stone type, shape, setting style, carat weight and ring size range belong. Free-text specs are a common trap: when Shinelabb's carat, colour and clarity were typed as free text, nearly every product had a unique value, so nothing could be filtered. Structured metafields fix that. On Shinelabb, one diamond-shape metafield drives the 10-shape "Discover Shapes" tiles on the homepage, the shape tiles on every collection, the sidebar shape filter and a rule-based Diamond Finder. Filters run on Shopify's Search & Discovery app: price, metal, diamond, ring size and shape.
How do you handle gold-rate pricing on Shopify?
Gold and silver prices move daily, and Shopify prices are fixed numbers on each variant. There are a few common approaches, each with trade-offs:
- Fixed retail prices, reviewed periodically. Simplest. Works well for silver, vermeil and lab-grown pieces where metal is a smaller share of the price — this is the model a D2C brand like Shinelabb sells on, with tax-inclusive INR prices.
- Scripted price updates. Prices are recalculated from the current rate and pushed to variants through Shopify's Admin API. Yukti AI already builds stores with scripted catalogue updates (both Shinelabb and Miswah products were created by script), so this is a natural extension — but it is a separate piece of work, quoted on scope.
- Price on request for heavy gold. For high-weight gold pieces, some jewellers show the design and take the enquiry on WhatsApp, then quote at the day's rate.
Live gold-rate pricing is something our jewellery software already does on the B2B side: the catalogue in the jewellery ERP and CRM case study is priced live off the current gold rate. If stock, metal and billing live in a system like that, the store can be connected to it in a later phase.
How should the catalogue, menus and lookbooks be organised?
Organise the catalogue around how buyers enter it. Miswah's shoppers come through different doors — couples looking for engagement rings and wedding bands, gift buyers shopping by occasion or budget, men's jewellery buyers, made-to-order customers — so its mega menu splits each category into Lab Grown Diamond, Moissanite and Gemstone columns. That meant 77 collections and 103 menu items. Because Shopify keeps menus and collections as store data, not theme code, they don't travel with a theme upload. Yukti AI created and published all 77 collections and the menus with one script, with a dry run first, rather than typing them by hand.
Editorial "lookbook" sections help too. Shinelabb's homepage has Shop by Category, Shop by Occasion (engagement, wedding, anniversary, birthday, gifting), Know Your Diamond (the 4Cs), Natural vs Lab-Grown and Jewellery Care sections — all editable and reorderable by the brand.
Can customers order on WhatsApp?
Yes, and for many Indian jewellery buyers it's how they prefer to start. A store can carry WhatsApp enquiry buttons on products for custom or made-to-order pieces, while standard pieces go through checkout. For catalogue-style businesses, Yukti AI has built a mobile-first catalogue inside a Shopify store that ends in a pre-written WhatsApp order, with no payment gateway — that was for La Yellow Berry, a Surat bakery, but the pattern suits made-to-order jewellery as well. A WhatsApp AI chatbot that answers product questions from the catalogue can be added later.
Product photography and SEO basics for a jewellery store
- Photos sell the piece. Use consistent, well-lit images on a clean background, several angles, and a scale or on-hand shot. Shinelabb's hero uses separate desktop and mobile images, and the product page uses Dawn's own media gallery with zoom.
- Write real alt text that describes the piece, for example "oval lab-grown diamond halo ring in 925 sterling silver".
- Unique titles and descriptions. Shinelabb launched with SEO titles and meta descriptions written for 11 content pages, from the brand story to a ring-size guide, plus structured data on products and collections.
- Helpful content pages. A ring-size guide that matches Indian sizes to a millimetre measurement, care instructions and a natural vs lab-grown explainer answer real buyer questions.
- No fake trust signals. Shinelabb's product page has a rating block that only appears once real review data exists — no invented stars.
Which payment options should an Indian jewellery store offer — and COD?
For Shinelabb, Yukti AI's written payments plan recommends Razorpay for Indian shoppers, because it covers UPI, cards, netbanking, wallets and EMI, with PayPal Express for international buyers and an INR base currency. EMI matters for high-value jewellery. The cart shows only payment methods actually enabled on the store.
Cash on delivery deserves care. A made-to-order ring is made to one shopper's size and choices, so a refused COD parcel can't simply go back into stock, and the higher the order value, the more a refusal costs. Shinelabb's plan leaves COD out in favour of prepaid payment with EMI. Your answer depends on your own margins and customers.
What does a Shopify jewellery store cost with Yukti AI, and how long does it take?
Shopify store projects at Yukti AI start from ₹60,000; the fixed quote depends on scope — mainly the catalogue model, whether products need migrating from a spreadsheet or another store, and integrations such as payments, WhatsApp or an ERP connection. Your Shopify plan and any app subscriptions are paid directly to Shopify. Focused builds like a Shopify store typically take about 7–10 days; Shinelabb and Miswah each took about 7 days of build work. The store is on your own account, and Yukti AI works on it as a collaborator you can remove at any time.
